Michael Schimmel – Metal Designer

The parish Kalkhorst on the Baltic Sea coast is where freelance metal designer Michael Schimmel calls home and where he also works.

In a traditional blacksmith’s shop located opposite the castle, Michael Schimmel produces individual pieces according to his own designs or as ordered by customers.

“Everything here is 100% handmade, “says Michael Schimmel. “The art of forging Damascene steel dates back to the 4th century. At the time you wanted to combine bad, brittle steel with flexible iron to produce homogeneous, elastic and hard steel.”
The high-quality knives are all unique; the mixture of metals leaves a distinctive drawing on the blade. In addition, Michael Schimmel also produces fixtures and jewellery, garden sculptures and lights: "I process natural materials of all shapes: besides metals, I work with stone, wood and even bones or teeth." Subsequently his wife Catrin Freuschle takes care of selling the products in her gallery in Klütz (Im Thurow 10) from May to October.

The contact with nature and the wide view over the Baltic Sea is for Michael Schimmel an elixir of life: "Creatively evolving is the most vital to me. Here I am able to lead a quiet and contented life where I can take the freedom to independently plan my time the way I want to.
