Fort Dömitz (exhibition “Im Grunde“)

The bulwark of fort Dömitz overlooks the river Elbe by the city of Dömitz. Its walls saw princes, army commanders, and kings come and go and inspired poets. Nature lovers can find the exciting exhibition “Im Grunde” and the visitor centre of the biosphere reserve “Elbe-Schaalsee” here.

Fort Dömitz is located on the “Mecklenburger Elbufer” and is one of not that many very well preserved forts of the flat country of the 16th century in northern Germany. Its form of a pentagon and bastions and casemates show the impressive embankment architecture of the renaissance. It was built on the remains of a fort from the 13th century from 1559-1565 and was used militarily until the late 19th century. The five bastions and casemates, the armoury, the old main watch and the house of commanders give an insight into the defence mechanisms of some centuries. Because of the specialties of the building and the uniquely great condition, the fort was listed in 1975.
