Ludwigslust Castle

The magnificent Ludwigslust Palace, situated in a spacious park with avenues, cascades, canals and water jumps, is the center of the late Baroque town complex. In the castle's museum, the restored rooms shine in courtly splendor and transport visitors back in time. In the hunting hall of the castle there is a café with a spacious terrace overlooking the castle park.

The magnificent baroque palace of Ludwigslust, situated in an extensive park with avenues, cascades, canals and water jumps, is considered the "Versailles of the North". Duke Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin had it built from 1772 to 1776 according to plans by the court architect Johann Joachim Busch as the centerpiece of the late Baroque town complex of Ludwigslust. The palace was inhabited by the dukes until 1945. As a result, the historically evolved atmosphere was preserved. In March 2016, the east wing of the palace was ceremoniously reopened after extensive restoration.

The heart of the palace is the Golden Hall. Monumental columns, large mirrors, magnificent crystal chandeliers and the restored parquet floor will make it shine in courtly splendor in the future and take you back to past times of magnificent balls and festive concerts. After the Golden Hall, the former Picture Gallery is the most important room in the palace. After the restoration, the gallery can be experienced again in its original purpose with a wealth of paintings by the court painters Matthieu, Findorff, Suhrlandt and Lisiewsky and extraordinary architectural models made of cork.

Furthermore, outstanding works of art of all genres are presented in the place with which they are connected by the two regents Frederick and Frederick Francis I and their wives Luise Friederike and Luise. On almost 3,000 square meters, the visitor experiences art of the highest order, among them including the "painted animal park" (Menagerie series) by French court painter Jean-Baptiste Oudry, busts by master sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, Meissen porcelains, Hamburg silver and Kunstkammer objects and ivory works.
