History of the castle

Because of its location on the River Elde, the Baroque castle was built on hundreds of oak wood piles. The plans for the two-storey three-wing complex in the style of Dutch classicism was drawn up by the ducal master builder Gerhardt Evert Pilooth, who died only a few years after building started. It was almost 100 years before the building was finally finished. The interior design alone took eight years to complete. Among other things, for example, the 1,600 m2 ceiling area of the normally rather simple country castle is decorated with elaborate stucco work and there are 32 fireplaces with rosettes, cornices and figures. From 1725 to 1735, Christian Ludwig II, later the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, lived here for a few years.

After the Second World War, the castle became a home for refugees and homeless people for a while. Finally, in GDR times, the castle was used for educational purposes and later also as a library and a place that served lunch. The building, which was built on piles, was threatening to collapse, so a lot of renovation work was done on it. Since the mid-90s, the restored castle has been a hotel. The lovingly restored stucco ceilings, which were restored to their original state by Polish experts, are of particular interest .
